The MAPP approach to child ADHD assessments

Our assessment process has been carefully designed to be simple, rigorous and supportive of your next steps.

Free 15 minute consultation

Book a free 15 minute consultation call where we can listen to you share details of your child’s experience, answer questions & help you decide if an assessment is the right next step.

Pre-assessment ADHD testing

A £250 deposit secures your assessment appointment, after which we’ll issue a set of pre-assessment ADHD tests to be completed online by you and your child (where relevant).

If the results indicate a full assessment is unlikely to result in a diagnosis your deposit will be refunded in full.

ADHD assessment & report

The full ADHD assessment is then carried out in person or online (with you and your child) by one of our experienced doctors of psychology.

They will then collate and share the results for your child in a tailored report that presents clear outcomes & guidance on next steps.

Treatment & onward care

Your psychologist will arrange a call to walk you through your child’s results and support you with clear next steps.

Whether that's ADHD therapy, shared care arrangements with your GP, or ADHD medication - we’ll be there to help your child move forward and thrive.

Child ADHD assessments at MAPP

At MAPP Psychology we’re committed to providing the highest standard of in-person and online Child ADHD assessments.

Our process is carefully designed to ensure clarity, precision & depth - helping us diagnose ADHD with the highest degree of accuracy and supporting you with tailored next steps.

  • Our team of expert psychologists specialise in understanding, assessing and diagnosing ADHD in children.

    Each psychologist:

    • Holds an advanced doctorate level degree in psychology.

    • Has undergone extensive training in the assessment of ADHD in children.

    • Stays up to date with the latest research and diagnostic criteria related to ADHD.

    • Ensures our assessments adhere to the highest standards of clinical practice in line with NICE guidelines.

  • We follow the NICE guidelines in line with the NHS, and employ a variety of psychometric tests designed to assess all key aspects of ADHD symptoms and related difficulties.

    These tests:

    • Are carefully selected based on their validity, reliability, and sensitivity to ADHD-related impairments.

    • Include measures of attention, executive functioning, impulsivity, and hyperactivity, among others.

    • Provide an objective and standardised way to measure ADHD symptoms.

    • Allow for a more accurate and reliable assessment compared to subjective observations alone.

Our team understands that ADHD presents differently in each child and can coexist with other conditions, such as learning disabilities or mood disorders.

  • We believe in a comprehensive approach to ADHD assessment that goes beyond just observation.

    Our private ADHD assessment involves:

    • A thorough verbal interview that provides a platform for you (and where relevant your child) to share the life experiences, behaviours and potential challenges you’re currently facing.

    • Valuable insights provided by other family members, guardians and/or teaching staff. We recognise the unique perspectives they can bring on your child’s behaviour and functioning.

By combining a full verbal assessment with collateral information we establish a clear understanding of the extent of any potential ADHD diagnosis.

This ensures the assessment is holistic, thorough, accurate, and reflective of your child’s lived experience.

  • We understand the importance of creating a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere for private ADHD assessments:

    • Friendly and approachable psychologists: We’re incredibly proud of our highly qualified team who take the time to build rapport with you and your child, fostering a trusting relationship that allows for open communication and collaboration. From the moment you step into our office you'll be greeted with a smile and treated with empathy and respect.

    • Thoughtful room designs: Our rooms provide a calming environment that minimises anxiety, and where you and your child can feel at ease throughout the assessment process.

Child ADHD reports & next steps

At MAPP Psychology our commitment to you and your child’s wellbeing extends beyond the assessment itself.

We’ve developed a personalised reporting process designed to share outcomes in a clear, practical and supportive format - serving as an important resource in positively managing your child’s next steps.

  • Our ADHD assessment reports provide a clear and concise summary of our findings, ensuring that you and your child have a comprehensive understanding of the assessment outcome.

In cases where ADHD is diagnosed:

    • Our report clearly communicates the diagnosis, outlining the specific symptoms and criteria met.

    • We provide detailed explanations to raise awareness on how these symptoms manifest in your child’s behaviour and functioning, as well as the potential impact on education, work life, and relationships.

Our goal is to empower you with the knowledge, understanding and coaching you need to navigate a ADHD diagnosis effectively, offering guidance and support every step of the way.

  • Our team recognises that every child’s experience with ADHD is unique, influenced by a myriad of factors including personality, environment and personal history.

That's why our approach to private ADHD assessments and reports is deeply personalised and subjective.

    Our doctors:

    • Take the time to build rapport and understand your child.

    • Foster a trusting relationship that allows for open communication and collaboration throughout the assessment process.

    • Listen to you and your child’s perspectives and experiences.

    • Ensure our reports and next steps reflect the nuances of your child’s ADHD symptoms and the impact they have on their daily life.

  • If your child is diagnosed with ADHD, we will equip you with practical tools and coaching techniques to navigate the unique challenges they’re experiencing.

In addition to outlining any potential diagnosis, our reports:

    • Offer suggestions, coping strategies, and ADHD coaching customised to your child’s specific needs and circumstances.

    • Provide techniques for improving your child’s attention and focus, managing impulsivity, enhancing organisational skills and fostering self-regulation.

    • Empower you to effectively manage your child’s symptoms and optimise their functioning in various domains of life.

  • We have both an in-house GP and partnerships with Glasgow and Edinburgh based consultant Psychiatrists to provide you and your child with support and treatment plans where necessary.

    • In-house GP: Can provide a cover letter to share your child’s assessment report with your GP to support the diagnosis.

    • Partner Psychiatrist: Can support with shared care arrangements for your child with your GP, including ADHD medication where necessary.

FAQ on our private child ADHD assessments

  • Many parents notice challenges such as difficulty concentrating, being very active, acting impulsively, or struggling with organisation and routines.

If these difficulties are affecting your child at home or school, an assessment can help you better understand their needs.

  • Children and young people can be assessed from age 6 to 17.

  • Our assessments last around 1 hour 30 minutes and are thorough and child-centred.

We gather information from parents/guardians and your child.

This helps us build a full picture of your child’s strengths, challenges, and development.

  • In most cases we ask teachers to complete two questionnaires which are completed online and should not take longer than 15 minutes to complete.

Understanding how your child manages in school helps ensure the assessment is as accurate as possible.

  • If ADHD is identified, we will guide you through the next steps.

This may include strategies for home and school, recommendations for support, and advice about treatment options.

  • Our assessments are conducted by fully qualified doctorate level psychologists using recognised diagnostic criteria in line with the NICE guidelines used by the NHS, meeting AQAS gold standards for assessments and reporting.

While many of our clients have had their child’s diagnosis from MAPP Psychology recognised by their GP, policies vary by region and by individual GP practice and so (as with all private diagnoses) we cannot guarantee it.

We will always work with you to support your GP in recognising your child’s diagnosis, and we’re also partnered with a private psychiatrist who has a high success rate with GP recognition.

  • Where medication is deemed a suitable treatment option for a positive diagnosis:

    • A follow up appointment for you and your child is arranged with our partner psychiatrist.

    • The appointment involves a holistic review of the diagnosis and physical health indicators.

    • An appropriate medication approach is determined with a prescription issued.

There are additional costs involved with medication.

    • The full assessment and report costs £995, with an initial deposit of £250 required to book an appointment and kick off the process.

    • Once booked you will be issued with a set of pre-assessment ADHD tests to be completed by you (and your child where relevant). If the results indicate a low likelihood of diagnosis your deposit will be fully refunded.

    • Where appropriate, we offer interest-free payment plans (Klarna and Clearpay).

  • We typically have appointments available within a week.
