What is Schema Therapy?

  • Schema Therapy was developed to treat personality disorders or when patients are not successful in other therapeutic interventions.

  • A schema is a pattern of behaviour, and Schema Therapy identifies these patterns and how they’re used as coping mechanisms.

  • It’s an integrative therapy, which combines different techniques and methods from various approaches

  • There are three techniques used in Schema Therapy: cognitive, experiential, and behavioural.

  • The reason why Schema Therapy is so popular is that it helps an individual understand how they may unconsciously respond to difficult or traumatic circumstances.

  • A therapist who uses Schema Therapy will attempt to challenge a client on their responses to a set stimulus. The therapist may use experiences from the client’s life or scenarios that imitate them to highlight the schemas.

  • Like other forms of psychological counselling, Schema Therapy relies upon a strong relationship between the client and the therapist.

How can MAPP help?

  • It’s never easy confronting behaviours that disrupt your life.

  • Sometimes these behaviours are difficult to identify, and it’s hard to understand what you’re trying to find a solution for.

  • Here at MAPP Psychology, we’ve prioritised creating a comfortable environment so you can approach therapy with an open mind.

  • Whether you’re new to therapy or are looking to start therapeutic intervention for the first time, you will be welcomed at MAPP Psychology.

  • Once we’ve identified an approach that directly matches your needs, you can begin to develop the essential coping mechanisms that will improve the state of your mental wellbeing.

  • The skills you learn at MAPP Psychology will be with you long after you complete your therapy journey, equipping you with the tools to maintain a positive outlook on life.

What results can you expect?

  • After a course of schema therapy, you will be able to identify and adjust negative patterns of behaviour that impact your daily choices.

  • It can take around 20 sessions to realise the full benefits, but once you have developed coping mechanisms, you can begin to develop healthier behaviours that will impact the quality of your life and those around you.

  • Taking the first step toward psychological intervention is often the hardest one, and we want to support you during your therapeutic journey.
